On the ground
The refuge on the ground
Its commanding position is a balcony over the Corsican high mountains. Many use it as a base to climb Paglia Orba, off the GR20; on the route, it comes before the long drop to the Col de Vergio.
The Paglia Orba (2,525 m) that towers over it is nicknamed 'the Corsican Matterhorn' for its slender profile — one of the island's most-climbed peaks.

Our traverse
Our passage on this stretch

We came through this sector on day 5, between the Ballone bergerie and Castel di Vergio — the day our diary calls the "breather": after the most brutal stretch of the north, the terrain finally changes register. What stays with us from that stage is the continuous beauty of the scenery — more forest, more water, that rare feeling of being able to look up a little more often —, the river accompanying the walk with its clear pools, sometimes almost turquoise, and the resupply waiting for us at the Vergio col.
In all honesty: we did not sleep at Ciottulu di i Mori, and our day 5 diary doesn't dwell on the refuge itself. For the detail of the stretch, read our day 5; to plan a night here, the practical information above is your best starting point.
