On the ground

The refuge on the ground

Perched above the valley, its washrooms run on solar power and meals are served. It's the last real comfort stop before the exposed climb to Haut-Asco, tackled early the next morning.

Just past the refuge, the Spasimata footbridge crosses the torrent some fifteen metres above the polished slabs — spectacular, but slippery in the wet.

Our traverse

Our night here

Hiker facing the jagged granite walls of the cirque on the ridges above Carrozzu

We slept here at the end of day 2, on 19 August 2025. Coming in from Ortu di u Piobbu, we heard the water before we saw the refuge: that sound of the river became almost a promise — drop the pack, drink something cool, finally come out of the descent's permanent alert mode. The end-of-stage beer had that special taste of days that were truly earned, and I went down to the natural pools for a quick bit of laundry. A short but precious moment: the air changes fast here, and the chill sets in within minutes.

Our night under the tent was spent in a forest that holds the damp: at dawn everything was soaked, the flysheet covered in dew. But the previous day's mist had gone, the sky was opening up, and we left at 07h56 for the Spasimata with full bottles — there is no reliable water before Haut-Asco.
